The Commonwealth Party supports capital punishment for applicable crimes but we also support any moratoriums on its practice in places where it has been shown to be unfairly and inaccurately administered. There should be a certain amount of time between sentencing and carrying out capital punishment to adequately allow for appeals, but it should not take a lifetime. We would establish a threshold farther beyond reasonable doubt where capital punishment may even be invoked as a sentence. However, if the defendant confesses without duress or without any ulterior motive then sentence should be carried out in less time. We will support reforms to reinforce fair adjudication, proper proceedings and reviews for capital trials to guard against systemic errors or bias before executions administered. We advocate execution for those who commit brutal crimes and extreme abuse of animals using methods to a degree commensurate with the crime in order to avoid being 'cruel and unusual'. |
